Understanding Humidity and Cigars
Anyone who has purchased cigars from a tobacconist's shop will know that they are usually stored in specialized cabinets that maintain a balanced temperature and steady level of humidity. Basically, such a cabinet or container is just a commercially sized humidor which operates in many of the same ways that the smaller, cedar boxes do. These individually sized containers often provide remarkably efficient ways to age and maintain cigars under optimal conditions, but they do require some regular effort and care.
Restoring Cigars with the Proper Accessories
So, it is the holidays or your birthday and you receive a great big box of beautiful cigars. You tuck them under the tree or pop them up on your bureau, and there they stay for the next few weeks. By the time you recall them languishing and forgotten in that far-removed corner they have taken on a seriously dehydrated and unappealing look. Should you toss them? Is there any possible way to save a box of dehydrated cigars? Actually, a well-balanced cigar humidor and a few secret tricks can often redeem even the most seriously neglected "stogies".
The Cigar Aging Process
Do you really have to age all of your cigars? Actually, this is an interesting issue, and enthusiasts are torn over the best way to enjoy a cigar. There are some varieties that should be smoked when they are fresh, and will in fact completely reject all efforts at aging and mellowing. For instance, those known as the Maduros are often extremely resistant to aging due to their thick and cured wrappers. The larger ring-gauge cigars, however, tend to do quite nicely in the aging process. There are others that can also benefit greatly from the practice, and investing in a special or individual cigar humidor for such varieties may be a good idea.
The Proper Way to Store Cigars
If there is one very common question posed by those who enjoy buying and smoking high-quality cigars it is "Do you remove the plastic wrapper when storing in a humidor?" Unfortunately, this is a question that doesn't have an authoritative answer. Many experts would simply reply that it is a matter of preference, but there are some benefits in choosing to use the humidor AND leaving the cigars in their wrappers while inside the well controlled environment.
Choosing a Wind Resistant Lighter
There are several options available for wind resistant lighters. The most significant difference between each of the options is the fuel that the lighters employ. Today, many users have switched over to butane-filled lighters because of their cleaner performance and because they impart no chemical taste to any tobacco which they are used to light. Either option can provide excellent performance in adverse conditions including wind and rain. For those who love the outdoors, a windproof lighter is an excellent accessory.
