How To Choose Lamps For Children’s Bedrooms

November 9, 2009 · Filed Under cigarette lighter light

Nothing gets parents more excited than when they are decorating their child's bedroom. They take great pains in choosing the colours for the walls, the style of furniture, the curtains and the rugs. Unfortunately most of them leave the lighting of the room till the very end. The result is that they either find that the light points are not exactly where they should be or they are left with messy and ugly wires running along the floor. It's always better to start with planning the lighting and then going ahead and decorating the rest of the room.

Before you buy a single thing for your child's bedroom, note down all the light points in the room. Then plan the layout of the room. Do you want the bed to be in the centre of the room or should it be placed against a wall? On which side of the bed will you place the bedside table? Where will the study desk be? Ideally the desk should be placed near a window so that natural light is cast on your child's books while they study during the day. Now see if the light points are near the desk, the bedside table, near the door of the room and other areas where you want to add a floor lamp or wall lamp. You should move or add new light points before you paint or put wallpaper on the walls.

Every room should have a provision for general lighting which is usually provided by ceiling lights. In children's rooms, these lights are usually placed in the centre of the bedroom or in the centre of the child's activity area. Remember, the room should be bright and cheery and not dim and dreary.

A desk lamp provides task lighting and it should be placed in such a way that it directly casts light on your child's books. The wattage of the bulb should also be such that the writing is clearly legible and doesn't strain the child's eyes.

A night lamp may be necessary for bedrooms of very young children who are afraid of the dark. The night lamp should have a low-wattage bulb which doesn't cast harsh light on the eyes of a sleeping child and, although not bright, provides a sense of security to kids.

For older children, go for bedside table lamps that match the decor of the room. The lamps are not only great for reading in bed but can also add a delightful and fun accent to the room's decor.

It's the table lamps, more than the ceiling lights, which will add mood and style to your child's room. Their design and materials should be safe for children so make sure you choose them with care. The wattage of bulbs should also be chosen with care.

After all the planning and buying is done you are free to go ahead and have fun decorating your kid's bedroom.
